    Eye Exams and Your Health

Did you know that a visit to your eye doctor can save more than just your vision?  A comprehensive eye exam can reveal important information about your overall health - diabetes, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol, and even some cancers can be detected by your optometrist.

Blood vessel damage, inflammation, and problems with the eyelid can each be indicative of a systemic health condition that deserves your attention.  If your eye doctor sees these symptoms, they may refer you to a specialist.

Has it been awhile since your last eye exam? Don’t delay your annual eye exam - it’s for your health.

    Protect Your Eyes This Winter!

Though the days are shorter in winter, it’s still important to protect your eyes!  Snow and ice on the ground reflect up to 85% of UV rays upward.  Exposure to those rays can cause sunburned eyes, also known as “snow blindness”.

To protect your eyes during outdoor sports (or shoveling the driveway!) your eyewear should be anti-reflective, polarized, and block out 100% of UV radiation.  Some protective goggles can even be customized with your prescription, eliminating the need to wear glasses underneath.

Schedule an appointment with your eye doctor today to find out what eyewear can help you look (and see) great this winter!

Has your Child had a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

Children may receive vision screenings at school or at the pediatrician, but these tests usually only check for distance-vision sharpness.  There are many eye conditions that can be missed by such tests, and are only detectable in a comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that a child have their first eye exam at 6 months of age, another at age 3, and one more just before they enter school.  Vision problems can be a significant barrier to learning and can develop quickly - if your child hasn’t had a comprehensive eye exam in the past two years, it’s time for an appointment.

    Contact Lens Care & Safety

Do you know how to properly care for your contact lenses?  To avoid eye infections, it’s vitally important to follow the guidelines provided by your doctor for cleaning and replacement of your lenses.

Check out this article from The American Academy of Opthamology for detailed information about how to reduce your risk of infection and keep your eyes healthy while you wear contact lenses!

If any of the following symptoms appear, stop wearing your contacts and make an appointment immediately: redness, pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge, or swelling. Even with no symptoms, contact lens wearers should see their eye care provider for an updated prescription and eye health exam at least once a year.

    FSA Dollars

     Use it or Lose It!

Flexible Spending (FSA) and Health Savings (HSA) accounts are a great resource for covering your medical expenses tax-free.  While funds in a Health Savings Account are yours for life, your FSA dollars may expire at the end of the year, depending on your employer’s policy.

Don’t let those FSA dollars disappear!  Schedule an appointment with your eye doctor now, before the end of the year rush.  Stock up on contacts or get an extra pair of frames before your benefits expire.

Consult your individual health plan for more details on qualifying medical expenses.  You can read more about FSAs at healthcare.gov

    Protect Your Eyes This Summer!

Summertime means more time spent outdoors! We all use sunscreen to protect our skin, but don't forget to protect your eyes as well.

    • Studies show that exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of developing cataracts and growths on the eye, including cancer. The same risk applies when using tanning beds, so be sure to protect your eyes from indoor UV light as well.
    • Sunlight reflected off sand and water can cause photokeratitis, the condition responsible for snow blindness, so beach and pool-goers take note.
    • UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or indoor artificial rays, can damage the eye's surface tissues as well as the cornea and lens. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and enjoy the summer safely while lowering your risk for potentially blinding eye diseases and tumors.
    • It is important to start wearing proper eye protection at an early age to protect your eyes from years of ultraviolet exposure, giving you and your little one the perfect incentive to look super snazzy in matching shades.

    Start your summer in style!
